Securing My Veterinary Assistant Externship Within 3 Days

Yay! I secured my externship! I'm so excited to have been able to secure one so soon and so thankful. In this post I'm going to be talking about what I did during the process, including the externship packets I made for the veterinary clinics.

First:

  • Make a list of the veterinary clinics you would like to work at in your area. Find out their credentials and what services they offer.
  • Find out who the medical director is at every site and make sure to double and triple check. I checked on the clinic's website, with what is listed on the BBB, and I even checked facebook! At one site I still had the wrong doctor's name even after triple checking.
  • Prepare your cover letter. Make sure to address the letter to the doctor you will be talking to. Also, triple check your spelling and grammatical errors and make sure to have at least two other people check them as well! I had two people check mine after I triple checked it and I still found a mistake.
  • Update and triple check your resume. If you don't already have one, make one!
  • Go on your PennFoster account, read through your externship packet (module 10), and print out necessary paperwork.

Make condensed packet for each veterinary clinic/hospital in a manila folder:

  1. Cover letter
  2. Resume
  3. Clinical supervisor letter from Penn Foster
  4. Externship site criteria
  5. Mentorship Aggreement
  6. Condensed version of clinical skills criteria

Drop off each packet:

  1. Go into the veterinary clinic prepared. Have a nice, neat, and clean appearance
  2. Go up to the front desk, introduce yourself, and ask how they are doing. Then, explain you are in the veterinary assistant program through Penn Foster and would like to speak to (medical director's name) about completing the externship portion of your studies at that clinic.
  3. If the medical director is busy and no one else is able to speak with you, ask if they can make sure the medical director gets the packet. Always make sure to address the doctor and everyone else in the clinic by her or his name.
  4. Do this for every clinic.

This is what I did and I secured my externship in two days. I went to a few hospitals on the 22nd of August and the rest on the 23rd of August. By the night of the 24th I received a call from a hospital offering me an externship.

Externship Update

It has been a little over a month since I started my externship! I have learned so much in the last 5 weeks and I'm excited to learn so much more. I really hope I get hired at my externship site. They have been hinting at hiring me and a few things have been said but nothing official has been said yet. If I don't get hired there I'm still thankful for the opportunity and am sure I'll get hired somewhere in the area. Since the externship started I have progressed more than I thought I would. Things I didn't think I'd be doing right now but am: *sending out samples for results *doing some callbacks to see how patients are doing *taking a client and patient to a room and then getting a history and TPR on my own *drawing blood *monitoring in patients and patients coming out of surgery I still have more ways to go but I am really proud of all my accomplishments so far. I will be publishing an official post once I'm done with my results but I just wanted

Warrior Challenge Obstacle Course and Mud Run

Today my husband and I completed the Warrior Challenge Obstacle Course and Mud Run! We got there at 07:30 bright and early. Before we went I ate a little bit of fruit and packed some things we might need (lots of towels, baby wipes, eye drops, snacks for afterwards, water, and electrolytes). I really enjoyed myself and it was empowering to accomplish it! Jake and I did it together all the way through. I'm so thankful that I have such an amazing husband that is so patient with me and helped me all the way through the event. The event was just short of 6 miles. It had over ten obstacles and included mud pits and a run through the woods that was very muddy! At the end we got some free water, Gatorade, fruit, snacks, and beer! I was very surprised but my Fitbit Surge held up pretty well! The only thing is when we got sprayed with water at the end, the force of the water must have hit one of the buttons and it turned off my Fitbit. That was as we were crossing the finis

Arizona 2.0

Since I've last posted there have been a few major changes and events that have happened. I have vacationed in the Bahamas, we have moved to Arizona, have bought a house, and have donated my hair. I've been meaning to update this blog for a while but now here I am watching Rome, drinking some cranberry juice, and typing on my laptop. Jake got a position in Southern Arizona as a contractor so we moved here and decided to buy a house. We looked at houses online for about a month before we found this one. It had everything we wanted in a house which was difficult to find. We did a virtual tour before deciding to put down an offer. It was accepted! Then we flew out to Arizona to walk through the home twice before going back to Tennessee and packing up all our stuff. After three days and both mine and Jake's cars breaking down in Texas we finally made it to Arizona. We lived out of a hotel for about a month. Because we were staying there so long, we received a special ra
